Driedger delivers as English River snaps Thief River Falls’ win streak at 6

COCHENOUR, Ont. – The English River picked up a hat trick from Jamie Driedger as well as four unanswered goals in the third period to help them pull out a 6-3 victory over the visiting Thief River Falls Norskies in a Superior International Junior Hockey League matinee Monday at Cochenour Arena.

Action in the opening stanza saw the Miners’ strike twice to go up 2-0 after one with Driedger supplying his 19th and 20th tallies of the season.

It was a reversal of play in the second stanza with Thief River Falls striking three times to take a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Taking advantage of a lengthy power play, the Norskies converted twice with the man advantage with a pair of efforts from Mitchell Soderberg as he registered his 18th and 19th markers on the campaign.

Thief River Falls then went up 3-2 at 8:59 with Tyler Chalusky finishing off the three-goal outburst in a span of six minutes and nine seconds.

Heading into the third, English River regrouped and drew level at 3:09 thanks to team captain Braeden Pearce.

Dwayne Auger then notched the game-winner 10 minutes after that.

The Norskies pulled starter Ryan Buttazzoni in an effort draw closer in the late going, but the Miners iced it with a pair of empty netters let from Driedger and Sidney Gladue to secure the victory.

Michael Lenko picked up the win making 36 saves along the way for the Miners.

Thief River Falls saw a six-game winning streak come to an end in the defeat with Buttazzoni stopping 31 of 35 in a losing cause.
