THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Friday that the English River Miners have been named the inaugural recipient of the SIJHL’s Team Community Service Award.
This honour, which will be presented annually by the SIJHL at the end of each season, will go to a member organization in recognition of their involvement in their respective community in terms of public service, non-profit events and overall involvement in various charitable events and functions.
Throughout the 2017-18 campaign, the Miners’ players and staff members provided over 1,600 hours volunteering their time and being associated in community projects, in many areas, ranging in time spent in schools, libraries, workshops and a plethora of other events.
The Miners also raised funds for the local Lions Club and Homeless Shelter through jersey auctions, Chuck-A-Puck sales during home games while a number of groups used team home contests to promote non-profit activities.
English River was also heavily involved with Lake McDowell First Nation taking part in workshops and helping create public service announcements on bullying, suicide and other important social causes.
“The SIJHL would like to recognize the tremendous efforts and community involvement shown by the English River Miners, in all the activities they have been associated with, prior to, and during the 2017-18 season,” offered league commissioner Bryan Graham.
“A hearty well-done goes to English River team president Jason Vinet, head coach and general manager Derek Sweet-Coulter as well as the entire Miners organization and players for coordinating these efforts in Red Lake and surrounding area,” added Graham.
Commissioner Graham also recognized each of the SIJHL’s member clubs for the tremendous work they’ve done in their respective communities with on and off-ice programs.
“It is a league mandate, that is wholeheartedly supported by all our member clubs, that our players and teams be active in their respective community efforts and initiatives. We commend each of them for their worthwhile endeavours in giving back,” summarized Graham.
The Miners will be recognized with the first annual SIJHL Community Involvement Award at a later date.
