Lakers win 2nd straight in handing Miners 4th consecutive setback

COCHENOUR, Ont. – Dylan Kooner’s ninth goal of the season, coming with 9:24 left in regulation, was the difference as the Fort Frances Lakers skated to a narrow 3-2 decision over the English River Miners in Superior International Junior Hockey League play Thursday night at Cochenour Arena.

An early power play helped Fort Frances score first in this one as Julian Uhryniuk picked up his fifth of the campaign 3:08 into the contest.

English River came right back however notching the equalizer just 54 seconds later on a Dwayne Auger effort.

The lone marker in the middle stanza was supplied by the Miners’ Tyrell Bourk as his second of the season put the home side in front at 14:37.

Tyler Malpass tied things up for the Lakers 5:51 into the third to make it 2-2 as he picked up his side’s second man advantage effort of the night.

Kooner then collected the eventual game-winner midway through the final frame as the Fort Frances captain secured the win for the visitors.

Ryan Wagner stopped 39 of the 42 shots he faced to help the Lakers come away victorious for a second straight outing.

English River meanwhile saw their winless streak hit four in a row with Michael Lenko seeing 39 attempts fired his way in defeat.
