Lenko shines again as English River defeats Thief River Falls

COCHENOUR, Ont. – A night after posting his first Superior International Junior Hockey League shutout, English River Miners goaltender Michael Lenko turned in another solid performance Friday by making 38 saves in a 4-1 victory over the Thief River Falls Norskies at Cochenour Arena.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Dante Raposo put the Miners on the board at 2:49 of the second stanza.

Thief River Falls came back to tie it a couple of shifts later on Parker Simonson’s 15th of the season, thus ending Lenko’s goalless streak at 113 minutes and 22 seconds.

However, English River countered with the eventual game-winner off the stick of defenceman Trevor Pereverzoff at 7:02 to put the home side back in front for good.

Sidney Gladue then iced it in the third for the Miners notching his 25th of the campaign just past the six-minute mark then concluding the evening’s scoring with an empty net effort at 19:16.

Michael Di Lullo supplied two assists to aid the English River cause.

Ryan Buttazzoni faced 31 shots in defeat for the Norskies.

With the result, the Miners moved one point ahead of Thief River Falls into third place in the SIJHL standings as they also won their fifth contest in a row.

The Norskies do however hold two games in hand on English River.

The two teams will meet once again Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. start back at Cochenour Arena.
