Miners blast North Stars in home opener

RED LAKE, Ont. – Led by a three-assist night from defenceman Trevor Pereverzoff and 47 saves by goaltender Michael Lenko, the English River Miners went on to defeat the Thunder Bay North Stars 5-1 in their Superior International Junior Hockey League home opener Saturday at Cochenour Arena.

Thunder Bay did get off to a good start notching the night’s opening tally midway through the first period on Nicholas Nigro’s team-leading ninth of the young season.

English River countered with a Jamie Driedger effort four minutes later to level the proceedings through one.

Pereverzoff then had a big middle stanza as he helped set-up a trio of markers off the sticks of Ryder Prue, Sidney Gladue and Braeden Pearce with the latter two coming on man advantage opportunities.

The North Stars replaced starter Dan Demaria after the third Miners’ goal in favour of Nathaniel Dupuis, who went the rest of the way.

Morgan Scriber then capped off the win for English River five and a half minutes into the third to round out the night’s scoring.

Lenko did the rest turning in a strong performance between the pipes to record the win.

Demaria allowed the three against on 22 shots in defeat while Dupuis stopped 20 of 22 in 34 and a half minutes of relief.

The same two teams meet again Sunday afternoon in Red Lake with a 2 p.m. matinee.
