Miners @ Dryden GM – January 23, 2018

After having their 5 game home win streak snapped on Saturday night the English River Miners made the trek down the 105 to face the Dryden GM Ice Dogs at the Memorial Arena. Michael Lenko would get the start between the pipes for the Miners while Landon Pavlisin would start for the Dryden GM Ice Dogs.
The first period had the play going back and forth. Both teams had scoring chances and power plays but neither team could beat the goalies. Dryden GM would get on the board first at 18:09 on the power play. Trevor Kavanaugh would rip a slap shot from the point beating Lenko for his 8th of the year. Miners held a 13-12 edge in shots but trail 1-0 after 20 minutes.
Miners would start the second on the power play but could not get one past Pavlisin. Miners finally solve Pavlisin on a great shift by the Ziobro/Evans/Cirone line. Mark Ziobro banged the puck home for his 3rd of the season and first against his old team. Miners keep things rolling in the second and take a 2-1 lead on the power play. Ethan Wong scored his 9th of the season putting the rebound of a Spencer Milne shot behind Pavlisin. Both teams would have power play chances but the score would stay 2-1 Miners. Miners hold the shots edge again at 16-14.
Miners would start the third period on the power play but as soon as it was over the momentum shifted in favour of the Dryden GM Ice Dogs. Michael Lenko would make some big saves through out the period to keep the score 2-1. A kyle Rosolowski penalty late in the third period would give the Ice Dogs the chance to get back in the the game. A Cory Dennis pass would hit skates in front of the net and bounce right to Kris Hamlin for his 2nd of the season at 17:10. The buzzer would sound after 60 minutes and this game would go to OT. Ice Dogs controlled the third period and out shot the Miners 17-8 but Michael Lenko stood tall in net for the Miners.
Overtime would start with the Ice Dogs getting an early jump. Trevor Kavanaugh looked like he had the winner on a wrap around but Lenko makes a huge save to keep the game tied. Miners would have a couple chances but Pavlisin would also make some big saves. Finally at 4:03 Terix Fischer-Kobes found himself all alone in front of the net with the puck and would make a nice move to beat Pavlisin for his 3rd of the season and the game winner.
The Goldcorp Red Lake Gold Mines “Hard to Play Against” Hard Hat would go to Michael Lenko who had a great game stopping 43 of 45 shots for his 9th win of the season.
A helmet for “Mucker of the game” would go to Sam Cirone with some hits and 2 assists.
Next up for the Miners is a 2 game home stand this weekend against the Minnesota Iron Rangers.
