Miners @ Norskies – February 3, 2018

The English River Miners made the cross state trip from Hoyt Lakes to Thief River Falls looking to even up the score with the Norskies for a SIJHL Showcase loss earlier in the week. Bailey Schmitz would start in goal for the Norskies while Michael Lenko got the start for the visiting Miners.
The Miners got the early jump on the scoreboard in the first period. With good pressure on the forecheck Ryan Patterson would intercept a pass in the Norskies zone and beat Schmitz for his first Junior A goal at 11:18. That lead was short lived as Cody Aarvig would score his 10th of the year at 13:20 to tie the score at 1. Miners would take advantage of a 5 on 3 power play as Kyle Rosolowski one timed a pass from Brody Jennings at 16:11 to give the Miners a 2-1 lead. That would be it for scoring in the first with the Miners holding a slight edge in shots at 12-11.
The Norskies would tie the score at 2 on the power play when Mitchell Soderberg scored his 16th of the year at 13:32. Michael Johnson would make it 3-2 Norskies at 18:24 with his 10th of the season. Schmitz would stop all 13 shots he faced in the second period and after 40 minutes the Thief River Falls Norskies hold a 3-2 lead.
Ethan Wong would get the third period off for the Miners early in the third period. At 1:20 Wong would score his 11th of the season picking up a loose puck in the Norskies zone and popping out before beating Schmitz to tie the game at 3. At 11:16 Michael DiLullo would score his 15th of the season to give the Miners a 4-3 lead. Michael Lenko would shut the door on the Norskies the rest of the way and the Miners would hold on to win 4-3.
A total team effort from all 4 lines and a good defensive team effort would give the Miners a win over the CJHL 4th ranked Norskies. Michael Lenko picked up his 11th win of the season.
The Goldcorp Red Lake Mines “Hard To Play Against” hard hat went to Ethan Wong who tied the game early in the 3rd and blocked 3 shots in the last minute of play.
Kyle Rosolowski would be awarded the “Mucker” of the night helmet.
The next game for the Miners in Saturday night at the Cochenour Arena when the Fort Frances Lakers come to town for a 2 game series.
