Miners rally to get by Lakers in shootout

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The English River Miners rallied late from a two-goal deficit against the Fort Frances Lakers and eventually prevailed 4-3 in a shootout Tuesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

Dawson Waddell staked the Lakers to the lead in the latter stages of the opening period before the Miners tied it with 13 seconds left in the stanza on a Jamie Driedger goal.

Fort Frances then went up 3-1 after 40 minutes on an even strength effort from Cody Merritt and one on the power play courtesy of Dylan Kooner.

English River pulled to within one with 3:41 remaining in regulation thanks to Jared Janke who then forced overtime on a man advantage marker with 61 seconds left.

After a scoreless five-minute OT, the Miners got the difference maker from Sam Cirone in the shootout to secure the come from behind triumph.

Jared Virtanen did pick up assists on all three Lakers’ goals.

Michael Lenko made 37 saves to register the win for English River while Jessie Heisz faced 46 shots in defeat for the Lakers.
