FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The English River Miners rode the strength of three second period goals to defeat the Fort Frances Lakers 3-1 Friday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League preseason match-up at Ice for Kids Arena.

It was a tight-checking opening 20 minutes that was scoreless.

The Miners began the scoring 4:49 into the middle session thanks to a Kyle Rosolowski power play marker.

English River then added another off the stick of Ryan Patterson to go up by a pair.

Nolan Dawson extended the visitors cushion in the latter stages of the stanza to go up by three heading into the final frame.

Fort Frances would get one back just past the eight-minute mark of the third courtesy of Jaedin Ness, but the Miners shut the door from there to preserve the victory.

English River’s Ethan Wong and Dwayne Auger both picked up two assists each in the triumph.

Westin Cardwell started for the Miners and picked the win, including stopping a penalty shot.

Rob Ivy suffered the loss for the Lakers.

The two teams will wrap-up the preseason with the back-end of a home-and-home set Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Cochenour Arena.
