Miners win 3rd straight in romp over Lakers

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The English River Miners rode the strength of three power play goals along with a pair of shorthanded markers to win their third Superior International Junior Hockey League contest in a row as the rolled to a 6-1 victory over the Fort Frances Lakers Saturday at Ice for Kids Arena.

Up a man, English River opened the scoring midway through the first on a man advantage effort by Nash Dabb.

The Miners’ Braeden Pearce then supplied his club’s first shorthanded effort of the night with a minute to go in the frame.

English River then chased Fort Frances starter Dylan Ossachuk 10 seconds into the middle session compliments of a quick effort off the stick of Sidney Gladue.

The Lakers got that back at 1:33 when Jack Bernie beat Miners’ netminder Spencer Eschyschyn, however the English River power play made it 4-1 after 40 minutes when Jamie Driedger beat Ryan Wagner who had come in to play goal for Fort Frances.

The Miners’ Gladue would cap off the win as he tallied twice in the third to finish off a hat trick with a man-down marker at 4:47 as well as one via the power play with eight minutes to go to round out the scoring.

Driedger also dished out three assists for English River on the night to go along with his goal.

Eschyschyn made 33 saves to record the win while Ossachuk suffered the loss allowing three against on 11 attempts.

Wagner stopped 19 of 22 in relief.

The same two teams will meet again Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. with Red Lake’s Cochenour Arena serving as the venue.
