North Stars @ Miners – February 18, 2018

The Thunder Bay North Stars made the trip up Hwy 105 for a Family day weekend game against the English River Miners at the Cochenour Arena. The North Stars have won 14 of their last 15 games while the Miners are on a 5 game winning streak at home. Dougie Newhouse would get the start for the visitors while Michael Lenko started for the home team.
First period action was fast paced with very few whistles. English River had 2 power play opportunities in the period and Thunder Bay had 1 but neither team could convert. Shots in the period had the Mineres holding a 10-5 edge but after 20 minutes of play the score is tied at 0.
Ryan Patterson gave the Miners an early jump in the second period. Patterson came off the bench and buried a Spencer Milne pass past Newhouse for his 3rd goal of the season at 2:05. Patterson would get his second of the night at 6:54 tipping home a point shot from Kyle Rosolowski to give the Miners a 2-0 lead. Jacob Siebenga put the home team up by 3 at 7:43 beating Newhouse on a pass from Milne for his 13th of the season. Rob DeGagne would call a time out after the 3rd Miners goal to rally his troops and it didn’t take long for his actions to pay off.Kyle Auger scored his 10th as a North Star blasting one past Lenko at 8:13. 18 seconds later Ryan Mignault would beat Lenko 5 hole to make the score 3-2 English River. Miners captain Same Cirone would give the Miners a 2 goal lead at 16:16 redirecting a Rosolowski shot past Newhouse for his 6th. A late penalty would put the Miners down a man for the last 1:50 of the period but they would manage to hold of the North Stars pressure. North Stars hold the second period edge for shots 13-8 but after 40 minutes English River leads 4-2.
Thunder Bay would get pressure on the Miners to start the 3rd period. Avery Siau would pass it to a wide open Alex Maticic who had a wide open net for his 19th seconds after the Miners penalty was over. Ryan Mignault would make the Miners pay for a mistake at 9:33 finishing off a nice passing play for his 18th to tie the game at 4. North Stars took control of the play for the 3rd period outshooting the Miners 21-5. Lenko stood tall for the Miners and after 60 minutes of play the score is tied at 4 heading to OT.
Both teams had a couple chances in the extra frame before Brody Jennings outmuscled a North Stars player for the puck the sent a beautiful pass across the ice to Nic Herringer who beat Newhouse for his 13th and the game winner. Lenko stopped 37 of 41 for his 14th win of the year.
With 2 goals on the night Ryan Patterson would receive the Goldcorp Red Lake Mines “Hard to Play Against” Hard Hat.
After taking a puck to the face and not missing a shift the “Mucker” of the night helmet would go to Ethan Wong.
