Miners are finally back at home and looking to break out of a 3 game losing skid and make it 2 wins in a row at home. Westin Cardwell gets the start in net for the Miners and hometown product Jordan Baranesky is in the lineup tonight.
Thunder Bay gets off to a good start when Keighan Geerie takes advantage of a turnover and beats Cardwell to make it 1-0 at 8:16. Avery Siau would make it 2-0 with a power play goal at 11:00. Miners would break out of a power play slump when Jared Janke beat North Stars starter Dougie Newhouse at 12:35. Spencer Milne scored his first SIJHL goal on at the power play at 17:50 of the first period to tie the game at 2. The score would stay that way at the end of period with the Miners out shooting the North Stars 15-13.
The Miners didn’t get the start they wanted on the second period when Geerie scores his second of the game 23 seconds into the second frame. Janke would score his second of the game at 13:44 to tie the game at 3. Matt O’Neill beat Newhouse at 17:22 with his 4th of the season to give the Miners a 4-3 lead. That lead was short lived as Avery Siau beat Cardwell with 39 seconds left on the clock making it a 4-4 tie after 40 minutes. Shots after 2 periods were 30-26 for the Miners.
At 1:15 of the third Coleton Johnson scored his 2nd of the season giving the Miners a 5-4 lead. Both teams would have chances during the third period but neither team could score. The score would not change until Jordan Baranesky scored his first Junior ‘A’ goal of his career into an empty net with 24 seconds left on the clock. The clock would run out and the final score was 6-4 for the home team. Westin Cardwell made 32 saves for the win as the Miners out shot the North Stars 42-36.
