North Stars @ Miners – October 20, 2017

Coming off a big home win last night the English River Miners look to make it 3 straight wins at home. Michael Lenko gets the start between the pipes for the Miners while Brandon Bodnar gets the nod for the North Stars.

Miners get the early jump in the game at 1:15 when Michael DiLullo banged home a rebound past Bodnar.  Penalty problems put the Miners on the wrong side of momentum and at 14:14 Avery Siau would beat Lenko to tie the game at 1. Miners found themselves shorthanded 4 times in the first and outshot 12-6 but after 20 minutes the score was tied at 1.

Starting the second period with 1:30 left in a power play the Miners couldn’t capitalize.  Lucas Sandberg scored his first of the year at 8:30 finishing of a nice  odd man rush passing play. The Miners would answer at 14:38 on the power play Jared Janke beat Bodnar for is 6th of the year tying the game at 2. Thunder Bay would take the lead back on the power play when Brad Thrower scored his 2nd of the year with Matt O’Neill in the box. In a wild offensive period Thunder Bay would out shoot the Miners 20-19 in the period and the score was 3-2 for the North Stars after 40 minutes.  The home team was lucky to be only down one after multiple odd man rushes caused by some bad pinches by the Miners defence.

Down 3-2 to start the third period,  Jared Janke scored his second of the night just  27 seconds into the frame jumping on a loose puck and blasting one past Bodnar. 18 seconds later Ethan Wong would score his 3rd of the year on a tip that beat a helpless Bodnar to take a 4-3 lead.  That lead was short lived as Keighan Gerrie would beat Lenko  for his 6th of the year at 7:15 after another defensive mistake by the Miners. Lenko and Bodnar would both shut the door the rest of the away and this game would head to overtime tied at 4. Both teams fired 16 shots at the goalies in the third period.

3 on 3 overtime would give the fans some excitement with a lot of space for the offensive talent from both sides to be shown.  At 1:57 Jared Janke would take control taking the puck from Tisi at centre ice building up speed then beat a defender wide before roofing a shot past Bodnar for his hat trick and seal the Miners win.

Michael Lenko would pick up the win for the Miners stopping 45 shots along the way.

Tonight’s “Goldcorp Hard to Play Against”  Hard Hat was given to Michael DiLullo.
