English River completes weekend sweep of Minnesota

COCHENOUR, Ont. – The English River Miners finished off a weekend sweep of the Minnesota Iron Rangers Saturday by skating to a 6-2 Superior International Junior Hockey League victory Saturday at Cochenour Arena.

A quick start got the Miners going as Ethan Wong picked up his 10th goal of the season 55 seconds into the contest.

Aaron Koivunen’s first SIJHL tally tied it for Minnesota 10 minutes later to knot the score at 1-1 after one.

Spencer Milne put English River back in front early in the middle stanza, but once again the Iron Rangers countered with the equalizer as Anthony Beltrame’s initial league marker leveled the proceedings at 4:11 during a man advantage.

The Miners went back in front for good later in the session when Mark Ziobro struck shorthanded at 12:38.

Sam Cirone made it 4-2 for the home side six minutes after that to make it 4-2 heading into the third.

The score stayed that way until late in regulation when Jacob Siebenga added some insurance with an empty netter.

Stratton Pickett then iced it for English River with 41 seconds remaining to round out the night’s scoring.

Terix Fischer-Kobes had a big night for the Miners by doling out four assists in the victory.

Westin Cardwell was the winning goaltender for English River making 18 saves while Tyler Thompson made 26 stops in suffering the loss for Minnesota.

Next up for the league is the SIJHL Showcase Tuesday and Wednesday at Ice for Kids Arena in Fort Frances.
