For the second game of the weekend series the English River Miners host the Thief River Falls Norskies at the Cochenour arena. For the second night in a row Brock Lefebvre gets the nod for the Norskies in net well Westin Cardwell gets the call for the Miners.
First period starts with some back and forth chances before Ethan Wong opens the scoring at 6:53. Wong scored his 4th of the season using his speed to pick up a puck lying in the open tucking the puck behind Lefebvre. Sam Cirone would make the score 2-0 for the Miners at 10:32 with a long wrist shot from the point after a face-off win by Matt O’Neill. That would be it for the scoring in the period and after the first period the Miners lead 2-0 and the shots are tied at 14.
The Miners would kill off an early penalty before Alec Daman grabbed a loose puck in the corner cruising behind Cardwell and trying a wrap around. Cardwell made the first save but Pet Grytdahl would rip the rebound home for his first of the year at 6:17. Miners would get the next power play in the game after Michael Johnson dropped his gloves and started swinging at a helpless Matt O’Neill nullifying a Kyle Rosolowski penalty with a double minor. Penalities would carry though the period with no success for either team on the power play. Nic Herringer would make it 3-1 Miners grabbing a rebound off the post then wrapping it around the net for his first as a Miner at 19:03. That two goal lead was short lived as Blair Lindholm was left all by himself in front of Cardwell and scored his first of the season 15 seconds later. After 40 minutes of play The miners wold lead 3-2 and outshooting the Norskies 30-20.
The Penalty parade would continue in the 3rd period. After Killing off one penalty the Miners would find themselves facing a 5 minute major penalty kill. Logan Jackson would blast a shot from the point past Cardwell at 9:47 on the power play to tie the score at 3. English River would kill of the rest of the major penalty before getting a couple late power play chances of their own. Unable to beat Lefebvre this game would go to overtime.
Overtime started with a Norskie still in the box so the Miners had a 4 on 3 power play. After failing to score the play would go to 3 on 3 after the first whistle. Both team had some chance but no goals were scored in the 5 minute extra period and this game would head to a shootout.
Miners shoot first and Lefebvre would stop Wong. Cardwell stopped Aarvig on the Norskies first attempt. Colton Cameron couldn’t beat Lefebvre and Jared Pedersen would beat Cardwell to give the Norskies the edge after 2 shooters. Sam Cirone would carry the hopes of a Miners win on his attempt having to score to keep it going but he would miss. Thief River Falls Norskies 4 English River Miners 3 (SO),
This was the second night in a row that the Miners blew a lead over the top ranked Norskies.
Next up for the Miners is a home game Tuesday November 7th against the Fort Frances Lakers.
